French’s Ketchup Back on Store Shelves!

There was an interesting radio segment on the CBC Radio The Current, where the president of French’s, Elliott Penner was interviewed over Loblaw’s decision to drop French’s Ketchup, but then reversed the decision when social media erupted over the decision.

In listening to Elliott Penner talk, I was caught off guard by the honesty and the caring I heard in his voice – caring for his product and for his products. He did make a lot of claims that I need to do my own research into - He claims that as much as possible, all ingredients are locally sourced – all the tomatoes are from Leamington, Ontario. He also talks about listening to his customers, and cleaning the company’s products of chemicals, additives, and HFCS. Now, I don’t know this person, I have barely looked into his products, and – truth be told – I have only ever tried French’s Mustard. I was unaware of their other products! So, now I am going to start doing some more investigations, check out their product line, look at the ingredient list, and compare it to REAL Food options.

From a different perspective though, this story tells me a few things:

1) YOUR VOTE AND YOUR VOICE MATTER. If there is something you care about, you can actually make a difference about it. Social Media is so powerful today. Are you using it? Yes or no? Why or why not?

2) YOU CAN CHANGE PRODUCTS. If there is something you want changed in one of your favourite products, companies will listen because they want you to buy their product. We need to be louder and share the same message. My message to companies is that we want clean and sustainably grown food! What is your message? And how are you getting it out?

…. Lots to think about! Enjoy the podcast, and as always, I’d love to know your thoughts!
